DRAFT

The ancestors of the Norman St. Clairs are believed to have arrived in Normandy with Hrolf, or Rollo. Historians continue to debate the possibility that Hrolf was in fact from Denmark, but most are now convinced he was a Viking from Norway.

More information will be added here in due course, but until then you will find below part of a Norwegian song about the massacre of Scots mercenaries hired by the swedish king in a war with Norway and Denmark. Colonel George Sinclair and his Caithness men were ambushed by Norwegian farmers at Kringen on 26 August 1612 and many were slaughtered.

The song is called "Led er din Sang" and is based on a traditional Faroese dance ballad called "Sinklars visa", written by the Norwegian Edvard Storm in 1782. It tells of Sinclair being warned by a mermaid to turn back. He answered her by saying, "Your song is ugly, you poisonous troll, you always prophesy disaster. If I ever get you in my power I'll hack you into bits." It is composed by Kristian Blak and sung by Eivor Palsdottir (Yggdrasil: Tutl, HJF 88).
